The COVID Pandemic - A Global Challenge

Mask

Masks for Masses

At the start of the lockdown when stocks of essential masks were low, our volunteers responded by making hundreds of masks with a month. These were mainly distributed to frontline workers. This experience helped us realize the need to work together at a time of uncertainty or emergency.

Free Classes

We used technology to connect participants in spiritual discussions and learning sessions. These helped them to gain a sense of control and added value to the sudden change in their daily life that the lockdown brought about. The teaching of local languages like Malay and Mandarin helped the mainly Tamil speaking participants connect better with their neighbors thereby strengthening inter-racial ties. Before the Pandemic

Health Fairs

We organized health fairs with the whole gamut of activities for young and old in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Hindu Temples. Response was overwhelming. Many participants fed back that having all the allied health services under one roof allowed them to do what they had been putting off doing such as the various recommended health screenings.

Many participants felt that the atmosphere of a “vizha” (Tamil for festival) at the temple was so much more pleasant than having to go to a hospital setting to complete the screening activities.

Family Atmosphere

Having activities for the entire family and keeping kids occupied allowed middle aged family members to complete their important screening tests.

Adopt An Archagar

Seva Singapore members in their individual capacities have also supported a number of activities organized by other organizations/individuals to provide COVID19 relief to vulnerable communities here in Singapore (Donation to RMK) as well as those overseas, These reflect the deep seated values of our members towards our credo of “Makkal Sevai Mahesan Sevai” cutting across organizational boundaries. Adopt An Archagar This is a project commenced by individuals within the Singapore Hindu community to support a number of temple priests in Tamilnadu state in India who have been devastated by the impact of COVID -19 on their lives and livelihood. The project is aimed at identifying affected Priests, linking them with Donors, so that the priests are ensured of monthly support. The project will focus on Mayiladuthurai (Mayavaram) area of Tamilnadu where a lot of temple priests are affected due to the loss of income from the indefinite closure of temples. Depending upon the response, the project will be expanded to other districts of Tamil Nadu. The main aim is to ensure that the Priests will at least have enough to be able to feed themselves and their families.

Donated Ramakrishna Mission

At the peak of the COVID pandemic in Singapore in April 2020 there were thousands of cases at Migrant Workers dormitories. A number of Hindu Social service organisations in Singapore responded to appeals from the government and the Hindu Endowment Board and the Singapore government to support Migrant Workers confined to their dormitories due to the pandemic. Seva Singapore members in their personal capacity banded together and donated about $2,021/- of their own personal funds to support the Ramakrishna Mission Singapore . The mission used the funds to prepare meals for the workers as well as arranging toiletry kits and other useful items. This is another wonderful example of “Sevai beyond organisational boundaries “ and the commitment of Seva Singapore members to “Makkal Sevai Mahesan Sevai” .
